Weather-Related School Closings

Snow/Ice

• School officials do thorough road checks in all zoned areas beginning at 3 a.m., and all bus routes are carefully examined.
• Based on road conditions and forecast information provided by local and national meteorologists, a decision will be made to keep regular times, call for a 1- or 2-hour delay or cancel school.
• For bus riders on a 1-hour delay, students will be picked up exactly one hour later than their scheduled time. For a 2-hour delay, they will be picked up exactly two hours later than their scheduled time.
• While the road you live on may be fine, remember others may not. Safety for everyone is the top priority.
• Should a storm occur once school has started, early dismissal options will be considered.
• All information will be made available on the TPSD social media platforms and messaging systems (email and text), WTVA, WCBI and the Daily Journal. 
   

Tornadoes

• School officials work closely with local and national meteorologists to monitor weather patterns.
• Based on information provided by the experts, a decision will be made to keep regular times, call for a 1- or 2-hour delay or cancel school.
• For bus riders on a 1-hour delay, students will be picked up exactly one hour later than their scheduled time. For a 2-hour delay, they will be picked up exactly two hours later than their scheduled time.
• While the area and roads you live on may be damage free, remember others may not. Safety for everyone is the top priority.
• Should a storm occur once school has started, protocols learned from regularly rehearsed drills will be activated, and early dismissal options will be considered.
• During regular school hours, TPSD storm shelters at Carver, Joyner, Thomas Street and Tupelo High School will be open for students, staff and all other individuals on campus. At all other times, the shelters will be open for the public as soon as a watch has been issued. It should be noted the city shelters are also available for the public at all times as soon as a tornado watch is declared.
