Remarks from Dr. Picou

Dear Parents and Community Members of TPSD:

The Tupelo Public School District has some of the most talented and dedicated educators in the country.  Our principals, administrative support staff, and teachers have been working around the clock to build and deliver our distance learning plan that will be available Monday, March 30.

The plan is a hybrid distance learning model that can be accessed from your personal electronic device.  Learning packets have been mailed out to those parents who requested a packet and to every K-5 student.  These resources are those that are available to your children during the normal school day.   All teachers have set up Google Classrooms where they have posted assignments.  Additionally, our teachers and principals are available during the school day should you have any questions.

This learning plan will evolve as we proceed throughout the emergency school closure.  At this point, we have been directed by Governor Tate Reeves to close schools through April 17, which means we will resume school on April 20.  This is an evolving crisis and guidance can change hourly in response to conditions in communities.  Everyone at the state level has been doing all they can to provide guidance and flexibility to school districts as we navigate uncharted waters in providing educational services to students who are at home during this emergency.

The transformation of a school district of 7,000 students from a classroom experience to a distance delivery home school experience is a very complicated process that involves multiple factors.  I am confident that the relationships between our parents and our teachers will get stronger as we work together to meet the needs of students.  I am also confident that we will all learn something from each other as we adapt, innovate, and celebrate the successes of our students.

Sincerely,

Rob Picou, Ph.D.
Superintendent
