TPSD Students Celebrate Literacy News Image

March 08, 2010

TPSD Superintendent Randy Shaver spent the morning with Mrs. Hankins' first grade class at Carver Elementary School reading "If I Ran the Zoo" by Dr. Seuss. He and other community members were invited to be classroom readers for Read Across America Day, in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday.

Dr. Shaver warmly accepted a thank you card from the class and thanked each student personally. These first grade students have made a new best friend with Dr. Shaver!


Tupelo High School's Community Mentor Program News Image

Tupelo High School\'s M.A.P.S. (Mentors, Advisors, Parents, Students) program conducted a luncheon on in the Performing Arts Center for mentees, mentors and parents. The mentor program is a collaborative effort between Tupelo High School and Parents for Public Schools for which dropout prevention is the main focus. Students are paired with a mentor from the community, and that mentor provides support and encouragement in the areas of academics and social development.


TPSD Hosts Orchestra Festival News Image

The THS String Music Department hosted an orchestra festival at the Civic Auditorium on the campus of Tupelo Middle School. String music students from the Starkville, Oxford, and Tupelo Public School Districts participated in this event. During the day-long festival students received orchestral instruction, participated in rehearsals, and performed together in a mass orchestra composed of musicians from all three school districts.

The TPSD String Music Program is under the direction of Ms. Svetlana Kaltchenko and Ms. Clara Newell.


1st Community Conversations With Dr. Shaver A Success News Image

TPSD's first "Community Conversations with Dr. Shaver" was a great success! Over 70 people attended and Dr. Shaver answered great questions submitted by parents and community members. Questions not answered due to time will appear on the TPSD Web site in the Q&A section.
