Some will prepare a solo to perform in front of a judge in order to earn a medal. Ratings (I, II, III, IV) will be given. We want each student to strive to achieve a Superior rating (I) in order to receive a medal. All students should be able to receive a superior or excellent (II) rating. Only superior ratings will receive a medal. Of course to do this, they MUST practice!! Solo Festival is a MAJOR grade for the fourth nine weeks! The better the students rating, the better their grade will be. The festival will be held here at TMS. Their individual performance times will be given out to them when we return from Spring Break. Please make sure that your child has a ride to get here! The students can stay after school if they need to. Not having a ride IS NOT an acceptable excuse to miss this event. We are giving you plenty of time to make arrangements for this. Students should dress VERY NICELY for this event -no jeans, t-shirts or tennis shoes allowed, please. Appearance is part of their score! Once again, we would like to thank you in advance for your hard work and support of the Tupelo Band Program. It is our desire that each child become the best person and musician that they can become! If there are ever any questions or concerns, please give us a call @ 840-8794. *There will not be a band booster meeting this month and the 8th grade Varsity Band will go to the Grenada Band Festival on March 26 or 27. Nurse Adams Tidbits: March is National Nutrition Month Ways to improve your nutrition from the ground up: 1. Focus on fruits and veggies: Add a serving each day to each meal and increase every few weeks. It does not matter whether you buy frozen, fresh or organic. 2. Look locally at a farmer's market for new foods. This is a great way to eat well and support the community. 3. Make calories count: Too often people think of foods as "good" or "bad". Focus on foods with high nutrients and vitamins. To find out how many calories you need, visit www.mypyramid.gov. 4. Test your taste buds: A healthy plan emphasizes fruits, vegetable, whole grains, low fat or fat free dairy products, lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, and nuts. "Expand your horizons." 5. Trick yourself with treats: A healthy diet doesn't mean deprivation. If you have a sweet tooth eat fruit and yogurt or a snack of trail mix or nuts. These are healthy choices and there is no reason to "go hungry". www.eatright.org www.mypyramid.gov 2010 Summer Health Academy WHO: Students who have completed the sixth, seventh or eighth grade. Example: 0252 would get chapter 2 practice test. To access the worksheets and Online Book go to www.phschool.com then click on the SuccessNet Login link. Use the following to login. User Name __________________________________Password__________________________ Ideas for using the worksheets to help your child: 1. Print the notes, and then have your child fill in what he or she can remember from class. What they do not remember, use the notes taken in class that day and/or the textbook to complete. (This will help assess what they are remembering from class.) 2. Print some of the practice sheets for extra help on lessons in which your child is having difficulty. Other great study tips: 1. Take 10 minutes and have your child “teach” you what they learned in class that day. Pretend like you don’t understand and ask them questions to evaluate if they understand. 2. Have your child read back over the notes each night after homework has been completed. 3. Have your child take notes in different colored pens. (Color helps students learn.) 4. Ask to see your child’s planner. (Lessons and quizzes/test are written on the board for the week. Students are to copy the lessons in their planner on Mondays.) 5. Check to see if your child is ‘grading’ his or her homework. Each child should rework problems missed to help prepare for quizzes. 6. Have your child rework missed items on quizzes. This will help students prepare for the chapter test. 7. Have your child copy the notes taken in class on a note card when he or she gets home. This will reinforce the notes. Then use the note cards as flashcards that will be easier to study. (Note cards can be taken easily in a car, studied during commercials of their favorite TV program, etc.) 8. Keep up with your child’s progress by monitoring his or her grades. This can be done either through the Active Parent website or by contacting the school/teacher.
