DO YOU WANT A CHANCE TO WIN UP TO $6,000 IN SCHOLARSHIP MONEY? Enter the MCIA 2007 High School Essay Contest sponsored by the Mississippi Concrete Industries Association and the National Ready Mixed Concrete Association. The contest is open to juniors and seniors who live in Mississippi. The topic for the essay must be concrete related. ARMY ROTC 4 YEAR SCHOLARSHIP: If you are considering attending a four-year institution, Army ROTC is looking for someone just like you. Army ROTC is an elective curriculum you take along with you required college classes. It prepares you with the tools, training and experiences that will help you succeed in any competitive environment. Along with great leadership training, Army ROTC can pay for your college tuition, too. You will have a normal college student experience like everyone else on campus, but when you graduate, you will be an Officer in the Army. To be eligible you must be a U.S. citizen, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, pass a medical exam and be able to score a minimum of 60 points in each event of the Army Physical Fitness Test. AXA ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP: Are you an AXA Achiever? If you are a student who sets and reach ambitious goals, demonstrates drive, determination and the ability to succeed in college and who has respect for self, family and community, then you may be eligible for an AXA Achievement Scholarship. This program offers the following awards:
*$10,000 national scholarships to 52 students--one from each state, Washington, D.C, and Puerto Rico.
*$15,000 additional scholarships to 10 of the national recipients. The national scholarship winners will also be offered internships at AXA offices and a laptop computer for college. USA FUNDS--ACCESS TO EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIPS: USA Funds works to promote access to higher education for all deserving students. For the 2008-09 academic year USA Funds will award up to $3.2 million in new, renewable scholarships to students demonstrating financial need. Students who plan to enroll in qualified postsecondary-education programs as full-time or half-time undergraduates, or full-time graduate and professional students, are eligible for $1,500 awards. Up to 50% of the scholarships will be targeted to students who, in addition to demonstrating financial need, are members of an ethnic minority group or are physically disabled. The scholarships will be renewed until the student complete their final degrees or until the total amount awarded reaches $6,000, whichever comes first, as long as the student remains continuously enrolled and maintains a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. THE GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARS PROGRAM: The Gates Millennium Scholars, funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, was established in 1999 to provide OUTSTANDING, LOW INCOME African American, American Indian/Alaskan Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any field they choose. The goal of the Gates Millennium Scholars Program is to promote academic excellence by providing thousands of outstanding students, WHO HAVE SIGNIFICANT FINANCIAL NEED, the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Students are eligible to be nominated or recommended if they:
*Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American
*Are a citizen/legal permanent resident or national of the United States
*Have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (unweighted) or have earned a GED
*Will be enrolling for the first time at a U.S. accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking first year student in the Fall of 2008
*Have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular or other activities

2008 ESF SCHOLARSHIP: It is time to apply for the 2008 ESF (Educational Services Foundation) scholarships. 60 high school seniors in Mississippi will be awarded $1,000 each. Application criteria include:
*write an essay of no more than 500 words on this topic: CREATE A NEW REALITY TV SHOW AND DESCRIBE IT
*enroll in an accredited college or university as a first time, full-time undergraduate student in Fall 2008
*be a current Mississippi resident and attend high school in Mississippi
*submit the essay and a completed application to ESF postmarked by January 15, 2008.

LAST YEAR TWO TUPELO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WON $1,000 scholarships!!!!
The University of North Alabama will host Preview Day on Saturday, November 10, 2007. Preview Day will begin at 2:00 p.m. and will include and academic/organization fair, campus tours, supper and the UNA vs West Alabama football game. No reservations are required and the dinner and football tickets are complimentary. If you have questions, call 1-800-Talk UNA. A full tuition scholarship will be given away at half-time. You must be present to win and you must be entering UNA in the fall of 2008. If you plan to attend UNA, the deadline to apply for freshmen scholarships is February 1, 2009.
MIRIAM SCARBOROUGH SCHOLARSHIP: The purpose of this scholarship is to assist a female high school graduate to attend Cottey College, located in Missouri, or a college or university of their choice located in the state of Mississippi. Each award granted is for one scholarship for one year--not to exceed $1,000. Monies are paid directly to the designated school. This scholarship is awarded based on academic achievement, leadership and need. The following criteria must be met:
*Female Mississippi resident and high school graduate
*Accepted by Cottey College or a college or university in Mississippi
*ACT score of 24 or higher
*High school transcript
*Leadership resume for grades 10-12--include school, church and community
*A statement of financial need completed by parent or guardian

THE SCHOOL OF VISUAL ARTS IN NEW YORK CITY: The School of Visual Arts invites applications to the Silas H. Rhodes Scholarship Program, a scholarship competition for new students, for the 2008-09 school year. First-time freshmen seeking admission for the fall of 2008 with a minimum 3.0 GPA are eligible for this award. Scholarship decisions are based on a review of the applicant's creative and academic accomplishments. To qualify, all admission and scholarship materials must be postmarked by February 1, 2008. Applicants will not be considered for scholarships until all the requirements for undergraduate admission have been completed.

The Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons will award 3 scholarships to Mississippi high school seniors through an essay contest. The value of each scholarship is $500. The scholarship winners will be announced in June 2008. The topic of the essay is "The Role of Plastic Surgery in America" and must be a minimum of 500 words typed and double spaced. Students may get information from local plastic surgeons or from the web site, www.sesprs.org. The deadline to submit essays is February 22, 2008. The Baptist College of Health Sciences will host visit days for all interested high school students on the following dates: Saturday, November 10th and Saturday, March 29th. Contact the BCHS Admissions Office for more information by calling 901-575-2247. Another special day is Saturday, February 2, which is the third annual "Salute to Scholars" program, honoring all students who are interested in the health care profession and who have excelled in high school. The last special day is the visitation day for all MEN who are currently in high school. "Male Call" will be held on Saturday, February 23rd.
BUMPERS DRIVE IN/WESTERN SIZZLIN ESSAY SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST: This scholarship is open to all graduating seniors who will be attending an in-state or out-of-state community college or university. Tupelo High School must submit 50 essays in order for one student to be awarded a $1,000 scholarship. Scholarship recipients will be selected based on the strength of the submitted essay. Students must fill out the scholarship application and submit a 500-word essay entitled, "WHY I APPRECIATE THE MANY OPPORTUNITIES AMERICA HAS OFFERED ME". All essays must be typed--NO handwritten essays will be accepted. See Mrs. Thomas for an application. All application forms must be turned in to Mrs. Thomas on February 25, 2008.
THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI LANGUAGE INITIATIVE: The Initiative offers minors in German, Japanese, or Russian, as well as a scholarship to earn 6 or theses hours through a University of Mississippi approved study abroad program in the language appropriate country. The program is structured so that students may complete the minor at an accelerated pace. In order to satisfy the minor requirements, the program begins the summer before your freshman year. Ten full scholarships will be awarded for the summer session study abroad experience following the freshman year.* The deadline to apply is March 1, 2008.
