Grade Level News!...
Challenge News - In Challenge this month we concluded our unit on The Presidential Election Process. Rankin participated in "Promote the Vote" statewide and held a mock election. Obama won the election here at Rankin. Several students portrayed the candidates and their running mates for a few laughs and quite a bit of discussion. The students wrote persuasive letters to try and convince others to vote for the candidate they like. The students will be watching next week to determine which candidate will be our next President.
Our next unit will explore the 1930's with a look at black and white photography, fashion, sports, music and life during the Great Depression.
Kindergarten - Kindergarten has been hard at work learning about the differences in day and night, nocturnal animals, pumpkins, and the change of seasons. We visited the pumpkin patch and had a wonderful time getting to see all of the things we have learned about in class! We are learning so many letters and sounds also! We have started journal writing and enjoy writing our ideas that are related to our Differences unit.
First Grade - First grade just completed a study of our community. We practiced being responsible members of our community by organizing a drive to collect needed items for puppies and dogs at the Tupelo-Lee Humane Society. Representatives from the humane society came to Rankin to teach us about being responsible pet owners. Also, as part of October's fire safety emphasis, we enjoyed a visit with firemen from Fire Station 2. They came to teach us about fire safety and we got to climb through the fire truck.
We are about to begin a study of traditions beginning with Thanksgiving traditions. We will learn about the first Thanksgiving and compare Thanksgiving traditions from long ago to those of today.
Second Grade - We are steadily building Koalaty relationships through the three R's- being respectful, responsible, and resourceful. We are also noticing relationships not just with people but with numbers in addition and subtraction facts, our community, and in our environment. We are seeing relationships in animal habitats and through community workers.
Third Grade - Third grade has just completed a unit on the skeletal system. The students learned various bones and identified the bones functions. We will now begin a big unit on traditions. The students will learn why traditions are important and how traditions are different across cultures. In reading, we will continue to review strategies and add new ones. Multiplication is going well in math. Multiplication is a skill that must be mastered in third grade, so we will continue to work hard!
