Once again this year, Rankin received the honors of being awarded three AEE grants. The following teaching teams at Rankin who will implement programs and units thanks to AEE are:
Elkin (Media Spec.), Mize (Music) and Clay (PE) ~ $1775 for "Logging Miles in Literature" This is a program committed to increasing listening comprehension, vocabulary, and the health of every student in our building. This program will incorporate the latest technology (MP3 Players) which students love, as well as quality reading material, which the teacher appreciates. Add to that equation, the need for all to increase physical activity and you have the perfect combination: Logging Miles in Literature. Individual students, small group, or an entire classes can check out the MP3 players loaded with teacher requested literature. Then using our walking track, students can walk their way through specific passages, chapters, or entire books.
1st Grade Team ~ $992 for "I Have A Tale to Tell" We will provide a book publishing center that will be open to students daily. It will allow children to not only write stories, but also publish them as books. After publishing books, the children will have opportunities to read and share their finished product with peers and other students through out the school. Student-authored books are among the most popular books in the first grade classroom. This will give the children the motivation they need to move progressively through the writing process.
2nd Grade Team ~ $968 for "Culture Shock" This project will allow students to be exposed to both fiction and nonfiction writing focusing on various cultures, plots, and characters. The students will able to view photographs of peoples from varying countries along with puppets and small models depicting native skin tones, cultural and ceremonial costumes. The class will also listen to music from many places and even have the opportunity to play instruments from the countries we study. This project will in essence take the children to different countries and explore various aspects of the culture more deeply than through traditional textbooks.
